NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION
Under the agenda item “2011 Libyan Crisis”, the NATO Committee will discuss the political, military and humanitarian dimensions of the civil war in Libya and the international response. In 2011, the popular uprisings sparked by the Arab Spring escalated into a full-scale civil war against the Muammar Gaddafi regime, prompting the need for an international intervention to protect civilians.
The Committee will assess the legal and ethical legitimacy of NATO's military intervention in Libya, the effectiveness of the operations and their long-term impact on regional stability. Taking into account the divergent strategic interests among NATO members and the differences of opinion within the alliance, it will aim to define a common roadmap within the framework of a collective security approach. NATO's role in Libya's post-crisis transition, democratization efforts and reconstruction will also be discussed. Delegates will develop concrete policy recommendations for resolving the crisis and will aim to formulate a comprehensive strategy on how NATO should approach similar situations in the future.
